Setting the Stage

Ahold Delhaize sought to elevate employee awareness of cyber security through engaging and innovative challenges. Clarity conceptualised Malice in Cyberland, inspired by the Lewis Carroll classic, where players navigate a whimsical yet perilous digital landscape. This new game introduced more complex puzzles, pushing employees' knowledge and skills to new heights.

Solution

Crafting the Wonderland

Spinbox developed Malice in Cyberland using an advanced Angular application seamlessly integrated with the .NET Core platform. This provided a cohesive training experience by hosting all games in the same place, including the original Cyber Defense Squad and The Walking Threat games.

Working to a strict deadline to coincide with Ahold Delhaize's Living Data Week event, Spinbox delivered key features in two-week development sprints:

  • Thematic Chapters: reflecting the original novel, four chapters were created, each containing unique puzzles and challenges that must be completed to advance.
  • Diverse Puzzles:
    • Password Peril: multiple-choice questions granting access to hidden challenges in Chapter 1
    • MFA Madness: fill-in-the-blank puzzle emphasizing multi-factor authentication
    • Terminology Turmoil: matching game pairing cyber security terms with their definitions
    • Phish Frenzy: series of phishing emails where players identify red flags
    • Malware Mania: crossword puzzle with cyber security clues and answers
    • Social Media Menace: series of social media posts where players assess trustworthiness
    • CCTV Puzzle: surveillance videos where players spot hazards within the scenes
  • Game Progression and Interface: players navigate chapters, solve puzzles to advance, and track their progress with badges and a percentage completion bar.
  • Hints and Penalties: strategic layer added with hints costing time, increasing pressure as time counts down faster for each hint taken.
  • Leaderboard Integration: players can view their rankings upon game completion, fostering a competitive and engaging environment.
